Update on the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) Process Good evening, Today, OSBCU and the other education worker unions completed their hearings in the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) process involving CUPE-OSBCU and five other education unions. The Ministry of Education and the Council of Employers’ Associations (CEA), which represents school board employers across Ontario, completed their response to the unions’ arguments. This was followed by a half day for the unions’ legal teams to respond to the Ministry and the CEA’s arguments. With today’s hearings complete, the arguments in the education worker unions’ cases have concluded. With the hearings now complete, the OLRB has proposed mediation to help determine whether an agreement can be reached before decisions are released. The education worker unions have agreed to participate in this process. The English teachers’ unions concluded their arguments on Friday, October 23, and agreed to participate in mediation with the Vice-Chair overseeing their case. AEFO has also agreed to mediate. The mediation process is intended to explore whether the parties can find common ground, with the involvement of the Vice-Chairs who have heard the arguments and will be responsible for the decisions. Because many of the issues overlap across the education sector, the education worker unions will participate in mediation on the same day as the teachers’ groups. The in-person mediation is scheduled for November 2. An important condition is that mediation will not delay the release of the OLRB decisions, which are expected within one to two weeks following the conclusion of the final hearing dates. We will continue to work toward a resolution that protects education workers’ rights and ensures we can return to the bargaining table to fight for the funding, staffing, and supports that education workers and students deserve. We will keep you informed as the mediation process moves forward and as further developments become available. |
